Over the past several years the REI Institute has been testing a series of rhythms for use in the relief or reduction of chronic pain conditions. Anecdotal evidence in several case studies has indicated that Rhythmic Entrainment Intervention may have beneficial pain reducing effects for some.

Back Pain
Jan suffered from back pain for fourteen years as a result of a car accident. Before trying the REI Program, she tried many different therapies--drug therapy, chiropractic, physical therapy, guided imagery, and acupuncture. She even attended a three week intensive therapy program at a pain clinic. Though some of the therapies offered some temporary relief, the pain would always come back. In December of 1993 she began the REI Program therapy. She reported that after two weeks there was a noticeable reduction in her overall pain level, and by the fourth week she had no pain most of the time except for a mild discomfort in her back when she was tired or stressed. She continued using the recording 2 or 3 times a week until mid March 1994 when she discontinued its use. In April her pain returned. She resumed using the recording daily, and within one week her pain subsided. With a current regimen of 1-2 weekly listening sessions, she rarely experiences any pain. She reports that if the pain reappears she just listens to the recording more often for a few days, during which time the pain subsides again.

Sciatica
J.L. suffered from sciatica for nearly two years before beginning the REI Program. Her pain started as an occasional aching sensation in her hip, lower back, gluteal region, and ankles--mostly on her right side. For the first year she controlled the pain with over-the-counter pain relief medications. She also tried acupuncture and cortisone injections. Yet her pain level continued to increase with time. In mid-July of 1994 she began the REI Program. She played her audiotape once a day for 3 weeks and 3-4 times per week after that. After two weeks of using her REI recording, she reported a significant reduction in her pain. After three weeks she described feeling no pain at all. In April 1995 she injured her back while lifting and experienced pain which she described as being as bad as ever. She resumed playing the REI recording daily and the pain subsided within one week. She reports that she listens to the recording once per week and has no pain except when over-exerting herself. Whenever the pain does reappear, she just listens to the tape more often until it subsides again.

Fibromyalgia
P.H. was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia in 1991. The original cause was thought to be an auto accident in 1990. Her pain was throughout her whole body, but centered around her right shoulder and upper neck. She also had considerable pain in her low back and sometimes suffered from migraine headaches. She began the REI Program in October 1995 and experienced significant pain reduction after 4-5 days. Her pain level before REI was rated 6-7 points and after 4-5 days was down to 1-2 points. Her lower back pain was gone. After four weeks she reported an absence of migraines and lower back pain, with only a mild muscle soreness in her right shoulder. This continued until February 1996 when she had a flare-up due to lifting. She increased the use of the REI tape and within about a week she reported that the pain had dropped to a 1-2 again. After six months with the REI Program she reported that her pain level continued to be at a 1-2.
